103270751_3209593019072600_6491735333532655464_o

In these strange times that we are living in, it’s been so good in recent weeks to be able to welcome our staff and patients back to St Michael’s Orthodontics.

Of course, as restrictions relating to Covid 19 still apply, it’s far removed from business as usual but with adjustments to procedures and extra safety measure in place, we are confident we are able to make our patients’ visits to us as reassuring and safe as possible.

So, what can you expect in this ‘new normal’ at St Michael’s Orthodontics?

  • Your treatment will be delivered by one of two designated professional, qualified clinical teams.
  • You will receive a health check call 24-48 hours before your appointment.
  • You will be asked to contact us from outside the building to let us know that you’ve arrived. When your clinical team is ready for you, we will escort you in.
  • You will be asked to attend your appointment alone.
  • Once inside, your temperature will be taken, you will be asked to sanitize your hands using alcohol gel and another health check for Covid symptoms will be carried out.
  • We will be practicing social distancing at all times except while treatment is being carried out.
  • After treatment you will be asked to re-sanitize your hands before leaving the treatment room and will be escorted out of the building.

These measures are being supported by rigorous cleaning procedures between each patient in treatment rooms and contact points along the route into and out of the building; a virtual reception service for arranging appointments and taking payments and the appropriate PPE – with strict processes for taking it on and off – for the treatment being provided.

Virtual appointments for retainer checks, initial assessments and treatment planning and appliance fitting are also being continued.

We appreciate that these new procedures will seem a bit strange at first but our fully trained staff are on hand to guide you through each step of the way. While you may not be able to see our own smiles behind the facemasks which have fast become part of normal life, you can be sure we remain committed to keeping your treatment on track to delivering your own healthy, beautiful smile.

By Catherine McCanny

Yorkshire orthodontist launches global education scheme

Catherine McCanny was one of the first UK orthodontists to see the potential in a life – changing treatment when it was launched in the UK over 12 years ago.  She has been so successful in integrating it into her practice, that she was invited to launch a European learning initiative.  Catherine explains how it has changed her career and the lives of 100s of patients and how digital technology is helping her create a positive experience for both her and her patients.

INSPIRED to become an orthodontist because of her own childhood with mis-aligned teeth, Catherine McCanny, was always on the lookout for ways to improve patient treatment.  When invisible braces were launched over 12 years ago, she was an early adopter.

One of only a small number of UK specialist orthodontists willing to try them, she could see how they would improve patient experience and results for people who struggled with uncomfortable and unsightly metal braces.

“Many people would abandon metal braces because you couldn’t take them out to clean properly or they were just too uncomfortable,” she said.  “Invisalign changed all that, but in the early days it was quite limited in what it could do.

But Catherine’s patience was rewarded as the US company, which developed them, has constantly innovated to improve their use and she can now treat much more complex cases with aligners. Recently she was asked to be the UK representative, alongside 4 other European orthodontists to co-author the Invisalign practice development cookbook, sharing recipes of success in how to grow an Invisalign practice.

Catherine, who founded St Michaels Orthodontic Practice in Wakefield, spent a weekend during the winter months filming a video to support the ‘cook-book’, sharing hints and tips of how to integrate Invisalign and digital technology into an orthodontic practice.

To launch the practice development initiative, Catherine was asked to do a webinar to the top 50 Invisalign speakers in Europe, The Middle East and Africa. She is presenting the ‘cookbook’ to a UK audience and the Invisalign team next week at a Masterclass in Birmingham, held at the Invisalign Headquarters.

 CAtherine McCanny Hendron lecturing

“I was invited to take part in this project as I had grown from a very low provider of Invisalign treatments to one of the top providers in the UK. I feel I can genuinely share my concerns and experiences (good and bad) and give confidence to other orthodontists to take the leap of faith into digital orthodontics. Digital technology is moving at such a rapid rate, I felt that if I didn’t get on board with it, that I would be left behind.”

“It seemed a bit surreal that I was sitting in at a computer in my practice in Wakefield sharing my ideas with orthodontists in different parts of the world-again highlighting how technology has changed our lives.”

The practice development book and videos cover five key subjects including; The patient journey from phone call to completion of treatment; Going Digital; Integrating Staff; Pricing and Framing Treatment Choice and Patient Communication.

“The US company knows that it has developed a lot of clinical support to help orthodontists but they felt that they were not always giving the practical support needed to introduce aligners into an orthodontic practice.

“Many who have spent decades using metal braces are nervous about trying something different.  The challenge is to overcome their fears. For me, it was a no brainer in that could give the same or better results with Invisalign than with fixed braces but with a whole better patient experience,” she added.

“The product has improved so much since I first started using it due to the innovative nature of the company. Every year they introduce something new and better and are constantly looking at ways to improve the outcome for practitioners.  An i-Tero scanner offers patients a more comfortable experience that taking impressions. The fact that the patients can see how their teeth can look at the end of their treatment, at the touch of a button,  is exciting for the patient but also allows the orthodontist to manage patient expectations and explain in more detail the outcome they are trying to achieve.

For Catherine invisible braces have made a massive difference to her own practice. I have seen a massive growth in the demand for invisible aligners, particularly in the teen market. I feel this is largely due the popularity of ‘selfies’ but also that young people nowadays have such hectic lives whether it be sports or playing musical instruments, aligners just fit into their lifestyles better and the whole experience is such a positive one.

“ We have additional digital technology coming to St Michaels which will allow patients to scan their teeth every week in the comfort of their home and the orthodontist can give advice on when to change their aligners etc. This will reduce the amount of time having to attend appointments, which as a very busy person myself can only be a huge advantage”

Orthodontist shares recipe for success

A Wakefield orthodontist has been invited to share her recipe for success with an international audience as part of a development programme by a leading US innovator.

IMG_8239

Dr Catherine McCanny is one of only five international orthodontists appointed by Align to share their successful secrets in a series of videos, blogs and seminars that will be streamed around the globe.

From her Dewsbury Road base, the award-winning orthodontist has already filmed her hints and tips to be incorporated into a cook book style format as part of the Invisalign Practice Development Project.

The Project will go live in March with fellow members representing Germany, Spain, Italy and France.

Dr McCanny, who founded St Michaels Orthodontics, was chosen to be the UK adviser due to her early adoption of the Invisalign system  and the mentoring she has already undertaken in the UK as a clinical speaker  and as part of the Invisalign UK Advisory Board.

“St Michaels has been using Invisalign since it was launched a decade ago and we have grown that side of our practice from small numbers of about ten patients a year to over a hundred annually,” she said. Catherine has recently reached the 500 milestone of cases submitted.

“As early adopters we encountered the initial difficulties that deterred other practitioners embracing Invisalign.  When I first started using Invisalign, it was very limited in what it could do, and I only used it for simple cases. However, the innovations that have taken place within the company over the last 10 years and my expertise as an orthodontist allows me now to treat very challenging cases. Initially it forced me out of my comfort zone as I had only used fixed appliances when training.  I then had the challenge of bringing the team on board. I started to use it on some of my staff and they quickly realised the benefits of this system. They were then able to share their own experiences with our patients.

“Developing that side of our practice has demanded investment in the personal development of our team and the installation of cutting-edge technologies.

I quickly realised that the main advantage was an improved patient experience and I was getting excellent outcomes, so the long-term benefits paid dividends.  The whole team here at St Michaels have embraced innovations and technologies such as I-Tero scanning which allows patients to visualise the end result before they commit to treatment” added Catherine.

“Collating all our different experiences into a recipe book system will hopefully give fellow orthodontists confidence to take on board the benefits of digital technology.  Experienced users can watch one video on a specific problem they are facing or practitioners new to Invisalign can use the videos and the book to help them as they start their Invisalign journey.

Hopefully our shared experiences and ideas will help others take the leap of faith and introduce Invisalign as another treatment option to their patients.

Ready to smile with confidence?

So you’re ready to change your smile, but how do you choose an orthodontist?

Thinking

For over 20 years, Dr Catherine McCanny has been changing the lives of patients at St Michael’s Orthodontics. Aside from the attractive smile and self-esteem boost that orthodontic treatment offers, there are many other benefits to a straight smile such as improved oral hygiene.

No doubt if you are looking to begin your journey to a straighter smile you have done your research and will be familiar with the types of orthodontic appliance available. For many, understandably, the cost of treatment greatly impacts the decision for the practice you will choose for your treatment. “Why does the cost of treatment vary between different practices?” is a question we are often faced with. Many General Dental Practitioners are now expanding their scope of practice into the field of orthodontics, which is a factor that can affect the variation of treatment prices. Generally speaking, the cost of treatment provided by a Specialist Orthodontic Practice will be slightly more, but with that comes many advantages.

What is an orthodontist?

Dentists and orthodontists both work to improve oral health. A dentist carries out general dental treatment, such as a check-up or fillings, however they may have a special interest in other areas like orthodontics or cosmetic dentistry. An orthodontist would firstly qualify as a dentist, then undergo 3 years of additional training to gain their Masters in Orthodontics. Specialist training means that an orthodontist would be able to carry out complex and comprehensive treatments.

Advantages of treatment with St Michael’s Orthodontics Ltd.

Breathe easy with iTero technology

The taking of dental impressions is now a thing of the past thanks to our state of the art iTero dental scanner.

iTero pic

This £21,000 high tech scanner not only removes the discomfort from obtaining a dental impression but enables us to provide you with a more flexible, accurate and productive service.

The handheld scanning technology creates a digital ‘dental impression’, producing highly accurate 3D images of your mouth that can be rotated, zoomed and manipulated in various ways.

Scanner image

It provides a record of the exact dimensions of your teeth and gums and, with the magic of technology, we can even forecast what your teeth will look like after treatment.

With the ability to capture up to 6,000 frames per second, our trained staff simply move the wand-like scanner over your teeth and gums, stopping and starting it as often as necessary. The new process is far preferable for patients who no longer need to have impression material in their mouth for several minutes – a method which caused some people to gag uncomfortably.

Being able to send the impressions to the lab digitally means a quicker turn around, saving you weeks of waiting, and with the scanner able to forecast the different treatment outcomes, you will have all the information you need up front to enable you to make an informed decision about the different treatment outcomes available.

The iTero technology is not only improving the overall experience for patients but is in line with the excellent level of service we aim to provide at St Michael’s Orthodontics to ensure patient confidence.

To discover how iTero can benefit you, contact us at orthostmichaels@tiscali.co.uk or check out our websites: https://www.stmichaelsorthodontics.co.uk/ or www.invisiblebraces-yorkshire.co.uk.

Wakefield orthodontist snaps up two top awards

ST MICHAEL’S Orthodontics are beaming with success after their specialist orthodontist Catherine McCanny snapped up two awards at the 2018 Aesthetic Dentistry Awards.

2018 ADA v2

Catherine – who set-up St Michael’s Orthodontics in Dewsbury Road, Wakefield 20 years ago – won the two awards relating to the use of Invisalign plus the treatment of teenagers.

She had submitted two case studies, including photographs before, during and after treatment, showing how the work she had carried out improved the appearance of a 13 year-old boy with very crowded teeth plus highly prominent ‘fangs’ plus a 31-year-old woman who was really unhappy with the appearance of her teeth, especially on the top right.

The practice was also shortlisted for the Best Aesthetic Practice Award, recognising the practice as a centre of excellence and the hard work every team member brings to the patient experience. St Michael’s Orthodontics have previously secured wins at the Aesthetic Dentistry Awards in 2013 and 2015.

“I am delighted to receive the recognition that winning these awards brings. I tend to enter such events with no expectation of success, knowing what strong competition I’m up against and to come out on top is a welcome endorsement of the standard of service and outcomes we are delivering for our patients at St Michael’s Orthodontics,” commented Catherine.

“I view the awards very much as a team achievement as it’s the service we all provide that gets results.”

The Invisalign award entry outlined how Catherine used the clear, virtually invisible, aligner system which gently moves teeth into position, to treat a particularly challenging case.

“Invisalign was the only treatment the patient would have but the level of complexity involved saw us taking the use of the system to a totally new level. The patient was on board all the way and by going that extra mile over two years of treatment we achieved outstanding results. We would never have used Invisalign for such complex challenges several years ago but, in doing so, it has given me more confidence to treat more difficult cases with it in future,” said Catherine who also won the Aesthetic Dentistry Award for Invisalign in 2013 and 2015.

“A key factor in the successful outcomes of both case studies that we submitted for the awards was that the patients were willing to work with us. Our teenaged case study involved 27 months of treatment, combining twin block removable braces and fixed braces.

Both patients were extremely dedicated in working with me and as a result, they a had such a difference to their smile and self confidence.

Orthodontist banishes nerves to create dazzling smiles for three Blushing Brides

KP1

BEING asked to create a dazzling white smile for a blushing bride is pressure enough, but for Catherine McCanny of St Michael’s Orthodontics, the pressure was tripled, when three brides-to-be contacted her Wakefield practice within weeks of each other, all wanting pearly whites for their big day.

Rather than being overwhelmed Catherine, and her all female team banished their own nerves at such a big ask and made sure there were no blushing brides on their big day, just beaming brides.

The job wasn’t straight forward though because all three had unique needs that made each case a race against time in the team’s bid to create dazzling white smiles that would be remembered for a long time.

Katy Young, nee Pargeter is a support worker in Leeds who was terrified of having tram lines in her mouth that clients might tease her about.

“I wasn’t vain but I noticed one particular tooth was starting to develop a life of its own moving further and further back. I love smiling, even worse I always pull funny faces in photographs but I was becoming more and more self conscious and didn’t want it to spoil my big day.

“I was a bit worried when Catherine explained that the treatment would last 18 months because I only had a year before my wedding. The St Michael’s team were great though. They made sure that the first part of the treatment was over and removed my invisible attachments a week before hand replacing them for the rest of the treatment after I came back from my honeymoon.

“The best part was everyone complimented my smile and no one realised I was undergoing treatment. Now my confidence is sky high and I am back to smiling as much as I ever did,” she said.

Gemma Peters was terrified at the prospect of a full metal brace. She needn’t have been. “At 25 and having booked my wedding I did not want to have to go through having a full metal brace fitted and I knew I would not have time for my teeth to be straightened, before my wedding.

“Sometimes you feel as if you’re just a number when you go for procedures like this; they just want to get you in and out. But they were really lovely at St Michael’s, always asking me about the wedding and how far I’d come along with the planning.

“I was so pleased with the result and felt really confident on my wedding day, both at the ceremony itself and at the reception at Bagden Hall.

Claire, who got married on August 20 at 315 Bar and Restaurant, Lepton, said: “I couldn’t stop smiling on my wedding day. My Mum said all I did was ‘flash my new teeth’ down the aisle and during the reception. It made a real difference on the close-up photos too and my teeth look so natural and lovely now.”

Dr Catherine McCanny admitted she had some nerves of her own when the three signed up for treatment within weeks of each other. “Every patient wants to be confident and look great, but it felt as though we were part of their wedding preparation team along with their mums, dress makers and make up artists.

“I am so delighted the girls all looked and felt great on their big day and afterwards.

The benefit of having Invisalign treatment is that there is scope to adapt the treatment if it is not complete in time for an important event. Invisalign is a series of clear plastic aligners which move the teeth step by step into their correct position. The technology means that the end result can be digitally planned. St Michaels is the first practice in Yorkshire to have the newest iTero scanner, which allowing patients to visualize the end result within minutes of having a scan of their teeth. As an introductory offer to all our patients we offer a complimentary scan. Just give us a call to arrange an appointment.

4 benefits of straighter teeth

4 benefits of straighter teeth

Many people believe that having orthodontic treatment will only improve your appearance, but a straighter smile will not only improve a person’s confidence but will also improve your oral health, eating and any speech problems. Having a great smile is something the majority of the population want but don’t think is achievable. Their wrong, it’s so straight forward! There are a number of treatment options to correct your problems. A quick chat with your orthodontist is all it takes; they will go through all the different treatment options available and will then decide which is the most suitable for you.

  • A major reason people seek orthodontic treatment is for a much more attractive smile. Smiling more often with an improved smile will build a person’s confidence and will have a huge impact on how others perceive you. We do live in a very image conscious society and impressions are made very quickly. If you are worried about what impression you will make because of the way your teeth appear, orthodontic treatment is the way forward. Having an attractive smile is a great asset and it is amazing how improving this will change the way people look at you.
  • Another benefit to having orthodontic treatment is to improve your oral health. Having crooked teeth may cause difficulty when cleaning as it can be a lot harder to get your toothbrush and floss in-between teeth that overlap. Misaligned teeth which are harder to clean will lead to a buildup of plaque and bacteria. This can cause gum problems and decay which may then result in the loss of teeth.
Halitosis (bad breath) appears when bacteria grow in your mouth. You can avoid this from developing by cleaning your teeth regularly and more efficiently. This would be much easier to achieve with straighter teeth. Straight teeth are not only a beautiful smile but a healthier one as well. A straight set of teeth signals a much healthier mouth which can alter the way others perceive you.
  • Crooked teeth may also cause eating and chewing problems. Straightening your teeth to improve day to day tasks such as eating is one of the four benefits of having orthodontic treatment. As mentioned before, Halitosis can develop in the mouth. If there is a tendency to have difficulty removing food when cleaning, then the amount of bacteria growing will increase leading to bad breath developing. Food may get trapped in between gaps in the teeth and may not be fully removed when cleaning. If bacteria and plaque increases due to food packing, gum problems may also appear causing irritation. Straight teeth will eliminate any gaps present therefore reducing the amount of food trapping, bacteria growth and gum problems.
  • Finally, misaligned teeth may contribute to speech impediments. This can lower a person’s confidence, self esteem and can affect your daily routine such as school, work and your personal life. Diastemas (gaps in your front teeth) may cause a whistle when speaking to appear and speech problems. Clearer speech naturally improves confidence and can make a person smile much more often. Smiles are a big part of our identity and can alter the impression we give out to people.

It is proven that having straighter teeth will improve a person’s confidence. A recent audit carried out by the team at St Michaels Orthodontics Ltd showed that almost 99% of patients that completed orthodontic treatment felt that a straighter smile improved their self confidence and would also highly recommend treatment to others. It also showed that ¾ of the patients asked felt that cleaning and their general oral health also improved.

It is never too late for your perfect smile!

Invisalign – the clear alternative to braces

As more and more people are looking to achieve a perfect smile, there has been a huge increase in the number of patients looking for a more cosmetic type of brace. Invisalign is a clear aligner system that gently moves the teeth into position and being virtually invisible is very popular with a lot of our adult patients.

Invisalign straightens teeth using a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made specifically for your teeth. As you replace each aligner every two weeks, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week, gradually moving towards the projected final position. Comfortable, clear and removable – Invisalign transforms your smile without disrupting your life. Something that over 2.5 million people worldwide have already discovered.

Our orthodontist, Catherine McCanny has treated over 100 cases with Invisalign and has had fantastic success with this system even for more complex irregularities of the teeth. Last year one of Catherine’s Invisalign cases won an award in the Aesthetic Dentistry awards and furthermore she was awarded the Best Aesthetic Dentist, beating off competition from high end cosmetic dental practices throughout the UK. She has had several cases accepted on the International Invisalign Gallery- exhibiting only the best results from orthodontists all over the world.

This year she has been awarded Platinum status in recognition for advancing the field of orthodontics. St Michaels also hosts regular Invisalign study circle meetings whereby dentists and orthodontics from Yorkshire share their expertise. We have been delighted to have the top European speakers from Align technology attend these meetings, updating our knowledge on the significant advances of the Invisalign system.

Many patients seek treatment for cosmetic reasons, but there are also health and physiological implications of having misaligned teeth. Many patients have reported that treatment has changed their lives, boosting their self confidence and self esteem. Studies by Invisalign have shown that people with straight teeth are perceived to be happy and successful.

The multi award winning team at St Michaels pride themselves on the service they provide for their patients. ‘We put our patients at the heart of everything we do and our ethos is that we treat people the way we would like to be treated ourselves’ says Catherine.

Our Invisalign Open Evening on Wednesday 21st May is a fantastic opportunity for you to come along and meet the team and see what we can do to improve your smile.
