DIAMONDS are a girl’s best friend and have helped a Wakefield orthodontist win international recognition.
Twelve years ago, Dr Catherine McCanny Hendron started trialing invisible braces that promised to revolutionise treatment for patients with mis-aligned teeth. More than 500 patients later and the award-winning orthodontist has been recognised as a Diamond provider by the US manufacturers.
The accolade recognises both the number of patients that Dr Catherine and her all female team have treated in any one year and the high standards of clinical excellence and patient care they offer.
To celebrate her achievement Catherine has received a plaque and certificate from the Invisalign team. The accolade comes just weeks after she launched a global education programme to fellow professionals sharing best practice and advice on using the system.
“When Invisalign was first launched it could be more difficult to get good alignment of the teeth than with standard metal braces,” she explained. “But we stuck with them, as did our patients and helped the company develop the product it is today”.
“Now, we use cutting edge technology to scan patients to get aligners that are better fit and more predictable in their outcome. There has been a huge increase in the number of adolescents wanting Invisalign Teen as this is more acceptable for older teenagers as well as patients who enjoy sports or play musical instruments. Scans can be used to make retainers which are more durable and more comfortable than before ,” said Catherine.
“Being named a Diamond provider is recognition of the number of patients we have treated and a recognition of the hard work that our team have put in in the last year.” she added.
“We work closely with local dentists who refer patients, helping them understand the benefits of our work, we also go out into the Wakefield community talking to schools and colleges about the importance of health hygiene and the impact it can have on their whole body.
“ I was delighted to be personally presented with two plaques by Abigail Lander, the general manager from Align- firstly for reaching our 500 milestone earlier in the year and then for gaining Diamond status. We hosted a party to celebrate our success at St Michaels Orthodontic practice on Thursday 8th August which was a sparkling occasion and a chance to say thank you to all the dentists who refer their patients to us. I was delighted to meet up with all the territory managers and people who helped me take the leap of faith into digital orthodontics.
“We’re delighted to have achieved Diamond status, but now the challenge is to retain that in the future,” Catherine added.
