Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

IMG-20190809-WA0000

DIAMONDS are a girl’s best friend and have helped a Wakefield orthodontist win international recognition.

Twelve years ago, Dr Catherine McCanny Hendron started trialing invisible braces that promised to revolutionise treatment for patients with mis-aligned teeth.  More than 500 patients later and the award-winning orthodontist has been recognised as a Diamond provider by the US manufacturers.

The accolade recognises both the number of patients that Dr Catherine and her all female team have treated in any one year and the high standards of clinical excellence and patient care they offer.

To celebrate her achievement Catherine has received a plaque and certificate from the Invisalign team.  The accolade comes just weeks after she launched a global education programme to fellow professionals sharing best practice and advice on using the system.

“When Invisalign was first launched it could be more difficult to get good alignment of the teeth than with standard metal braces,” she explained.  “But we stuck with them, as did our patients and helped the company develop the product it is today”.

“Now, we use cutting edge technology to scan patients to get aligners that are better fit and more predictable in their outcome. There has been a huge increase in the number of adolescents wanting Invisalign Teen as this is more acceptable for older teenagers as well as patients who enjoy sports or play musical instruments. Scans can be used to make retainers which are more durable and more comfortable than before ,” said Catherine.

“Being named a Diamond provider is recognition of the number of patients we have treated and a recognition of the hard work that our team have put in in the last year.” she added.

“We work closely with local dentists who refer patients, helping them understand the benefits of our work, we also go out into the Wakefield community talking to schools and colleges about the importance of health hygiene and the impact it can have on their whole body.

“ I was delighted to be personally presented with two plaques by Abigail Lander, the general manager from Align- firstly for reaching our 500 milestone earlier in the year and then for gaining Diamond status. We hosted a party to celebrate our success at St Michaels Orthodontic practice on Thursday 8th August which was a sparkling occasion and a chance to say thank you to all the dentists who refer their patients to us. I  was delighted to meet up with all the territory managers and people who helped me take the leap of faith into digital orthodontics.

“We’re delighted to have achieved Diamond status, but now the challenge is to retain that in the future,” Catherine added.

Wakefield Orthodontist smiles as global stage beckons

AN award-winning Wakefield Orthodontist, who runs a female only practice has been selected as a global ambassador for an international company.

Dr Catherine McCanny, specialist orthodontist at St Michael’s Orthodontics, Dewsbury Road, has been chosen as a clinical speaker and key opinion leader for Invisalign, thanks to her experience and expertise using the invisible brace system for complex cases.  As the UK’s only second female Invisalign speaker, she wants to encourage more orthodontists to pick up the baton to help patients achieve straight teeth pain-free.

One of the most experienced Invisalign practitioners in the UK Catherine has helped 1000s of patients achieve a better smile without the need for surgery.  It was this track record that won her Platinum Elite Status and prompted the company to invite her to share her knowledge with other orthodontists.

“Invisalign aligns patients’ teeth in an almost invisible way; it is a much more comfortable and efficient alternative to fixed braces.  In even the most complex cases it has eradicated the need for surgery.   Thanks to my experience with the treatment, I now use Invisalign for the most complex of cases,” said Dr McCanny.

“Due to my experience I’ve gone from using the Invisalign on 10 cases a year to now over 80 cases a year.  Eventually, I hope to use Invisalign for 75 per cent of all my adult cases and share this conversion with other dentists and orthodontists through my new clinical speaker role.”

Catherine received her clinical speaker training in Amsterdam earlier this month and will start her new role in Birmingham on 3rd May.

This recent accolade follows her success at the 2018 Aesthetic Dentistry Awards where she snapped up two awards relating to the use of Invisalign plus the treatment of teenagers.

Catherine added: “I am extremely privileged and honoured to be chosen by Invisalign as a Clinical Speaker.  This international treatment is globally recognised and I hope this showcases St Michael’s Orthodontics as a worldwide centre of excellence.

“I am excited to share my passion of the Invisalign system with my colleagues. We are all trained in using fixed appliances and it is easy to stay in our comfort zone.   However, I hope that by demonstrating how I have treated my patients with Invisalign that other colleagues will start to see the benefits of this system.”

Wakefield orthodontist snaps up two top awards

ST MICHAEL’S Orthodontics are beaming with success after their specialist orthodontist Catherine McCanny snapped up two awards at the 2018 Aesthetic Dentistry Awards.

2018 ADA v2

Catherine – who set-up St Michael’s Orthodontics in Dewsbury Road, Wakefield 20 years ago – won the two awards relating to the use of Invisalign plus the treatment of teenagers.

She had submitted two case studies, including photographs before, during and after treatment, showing how the work she had carried out improved the appearance of a 13 year-old boy with very crowded teeth plus highly prominent ‘fangs’ plus a 31-year-old woman who was really unhappy with the appearance of her teeth, especially on the top right.

The practice was also shortlisted for the Best Aesthetic Practice Award, recognising the practice as a centre of excellence and the hard work every team member brings to the patient experience. St Michael’s Orthodontics have previously secured wins at the Aesthetic Dentistry Awards in 2013 and 2015.

“I am delighted to receive the recognition that winning these awards brings. I tend to enter such events with no expectation of success, knowing what strong competition I’m up against and to come out on top is a welcome endorsement of the standard of service and outcomes we are delivering for our patients at St Michael’s Orthodontics,” commented Catherine.

“I view the awards very much as a team achievement as it’s the service we all provide that gets results.”

The Invisalign award entry outlined how Catherine used the clear, virtually invisible, aligner system which gently moves teeth into position, to treat a particularly challenging case.

“Invisalign was the only treatment the patient would have but the level of complexity involved saw us taking the use of the system to a totally new level. The patient was on board all the way and by going that extra mile over two years of treatment we achieved outstanding results. We would never have used Invisalign for such complex challenges several years ago but, in doing so, it has given me more confidence to treat more difficult cases with it in future,” said Catherine who also won the Aesthetic Dentistry Award for Invisalign in 2013 and 2015.

“A key factor in the successful outcomes of both case studies that we submitted for the awards was that the patients were willing to work with us. Our teenaged case study involved 27 months of treatment, combining twin block removable braces and fixed braces.

Both patients were extremely dedicated in working with me and as a result, they a had such a difference to their smile and self confidence.

Orthodontist banishes nerves to create dazzling smiles for three Blushing Brides

KP1

BEING asked to create a dazzling white smile for a blushing bride is pressure enough, but for Catherine McCanny of St Michael’s Orthodontics, the pressure was tripled, when three brides-to-be contacted her Wakefield practice within weeks of each other, all wanting pearly whites for their big day.

Rather than being overwhelmed Catherine, and her all female team banished their own nerves at such a big ask and made sure there were no blushing brides on their big day, just beaming brides.

The job wasn’t straight forward though because all three had unique needs that made each case a race against time in the team’s bid to create dazzling white smiles that would be remembered for a long time.

Katy Young, nee Pargeter is a support worker in Leeds who was terrified of having tram lines in her mouth that clients might tease her about.

“I wasn’t vain but I noticed one particular tooth was starting to develop a life of its own moving further and further back. I love smiling, even worse I always pull funny faces in photographs but I was becoming more and more self conscious and didn’t want it to spoil my big day.

“I was a bit worried when Catherine explained that the treatment would last 18 months because I only had a year before my wedding. The St Michael’s team were great though. They made sure that the first part of the treatment was over and removed my invisible attachments a week before hand replacing them for the rest of the treatment after I came back from my honeymoon.

“The best part was everyone complimented my smile and no one realised I was undergoing treatment. Now my confidence is sky high and I am back to smiling as much as I ever did,” she said.

Gemma Peters was terrified at the prospect of a full metal brace. She needn’t have been. “At 25 and having booked my wedding I did not want to have to go through having a full metal brace fitted and I knew I would not have time for my teeth to be straightened, before my wedding.

“Sometimes you feel as if you’re just a number when you go for procedures like this; they just want to get you in and out. But they were really lovely at St Michael’s, always asking me about the wedding and how far I’d come along with the planning.

“I was so pleased with the result and felt really confident on my wedding day, both at the ceremony itself and at the reception at Bagden Hall.

Claire, who got married on August 20 at 315 Bar and Restaurant, Lepton, said: “I couldn’t stop smiling on my wedding day. My Mum said all I did was ‘flash my new teeth’ down the aisle and during the reception. It made a real difference on the close-up photos too and my teeth look so natural and lovely now.”

Dr Catherine McCanny admitted she had some nerves of her own when the three signed up for treatment within weeks of each other. “Every patient wants to be confident and look great, but it felt as though we were part of their wedding preparation team along with their mums, dress makers and make up artists.

“I am so delighted the girls all looked and felt great on their big day and afterwards.

The benefit of having Invisalign treatment is that there is scope to adapt the treatment if it is not complete in time for an important event. Invisalign is a series of clear plastic aligners which move the teeth step by step into their correct position. The technology means that the end result can be digitally planned. St Michaels is the first practice in Yorkshire to have the newest iTero scanner, which allowing patients to visualize the end result within minutes of having a scan of their teeth. As an introductory offer to all our patients we offer a complimentary scan. Just give us a call to arrange an appointment.

National Smile Month – Local schools brush up on their knowledge on the importance of good oral hygiene!

The UK’s largest and longest running oral health campaign is on its way. National smile month takes place between May 18th and June 18th and is the perfect opportunity to educate the local community on how important Oral Health is. It’s a time for as many people as   possible to get involved in this jam packed, fun month where hundreds of events and activities will take place.
Here at St Michaels Orthodontics we think it is very important for everyone to have a good understanding on how important good oral health is, especially young children! We feel if children learn young then hopefully in the future there will be a lower percentage of adults with dental problems. Two members of staff here at St Michaels, Katie and Kate, make regular visits to local schools and present a talk on oral hygiene, braces and ourselves at St Michaels Orthodontics. Recently they have visited 3 different classes, one at Flushdyke Junior and Infant School and two at Towngate School. They came back with such great feedback on how much the children and teachers learnt from the talk! They were amazed how much they learnt, two minutes of brushing is actually a very long time! Also who’d of thought flavored water contained so much sugar? The children and teachers won’t be drinking that as much anymore! The children loved getting involved and learning about how the brush their teeth properly, what to use, what’s good and what’s bad for your teeth and the consequences if good oral hygiene doesn’t take place.

There are so many ways of getting yourself, your team and your friends involved. Why not select a few people and do a sponsored leg wax or create an eye catching display full of posters and information. Why not do a smileathron? Here at St Michaels Orthodontics we love taking as many pictures (selfies) as we can with the national smile month smilies. It’s a fun and easy way of taking part. You could even get your hands dirty and get all creative baking some tasty little treats to sell and raise money. Last year the staff at St Michaels did a full week of baking and raised a great amount of money for this event. Our therapist Katie and her nurse Kate also set up a cart at our local shopping centre handing out leaflets, toothpaste samples, balloons and pens as well as stopping shoppers walking past and having a quick chat about the importance of good Oral Health. There’s so much to do so there’s no excuse to not take part!   bun pj buns Continue reading

National Smile Month @ St Michaels Orthodontics Ltd

Well where do I start! Here at St Michaels Orthodontics Ltd in Wakefield we enjoy nothing more than getting involved in events such as National Smile Month. It’s a great way to get the message about oral health out to the public, raise money for good causes and for the team to have some fun in the meantime. This year is no different; we kick off NSM with our ‘Bake a smile’ week. We will be selling cakes and goodies on reception from Monday 19th May to Friday 23rd May. Any money raised will be donated to Operation Smile who do wonderful work across the globe providing safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate.

We are also holding an Invisalign open evening to allow anyone wanting more information to come along, meet our team of experts and have a free consultation with Catherine McCanny, our Platinum Invisalign provider. In addition we will be offering discounts on treatment and free whitening after Invisalign treatment to make that smile even more perfect!

Our Orthodontic Therapist Katie and her nurse Kate have arranged a stall in our local city centre on Saturday 31st May, where they will be promoting National Smile Month by giving out free merchandise and information on oral health and orthodontics.

On Friday 6th June the walking boots will go back on and the team will be doing an 8 mile hike in Knaresborough to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

And finally …. after an event packed NSM the team will be ready for some rest, so to chill out it will be strictly PJ’s only to wear for work on Tuesday 10th June!!
